Resources » Child Abuse – Mandated Reporting Guidelines

As a child care provider you belong to a group of people called “Mandated Reporters”. This means that you are required by law to report to Children’s Protective Services (CPS) at DHS, any time you suspect child abuse or neglect. You do not need to prove that abuse or neglect has taken place. Indeed it is not your job to prove anything. This can be a daunting task for a child care provider especially if it concerns a parent or guardian of a child in your care. Keep in mind that you must advocate for the child and that you ARE REQUIRED BY LAW to report. Read through the Mandated Reporter’s Guide for more detailed information.  Where can this be found??

How to make a report?

You are required to make an immediate verbal report to CPS and a written report within 72 hours. If you work for a center or group home you are required to notify the center director but simply telling your boss does not fulfill the requirement to report.

Who do I call?

The verbal report can be completed by calling toll free 1-800-942-4357 or by calling the local DHS Child Protective Services Unit.

Confidentiality, Civil and Criminal Liability

Your report will remain confidential and your name will not be released. If you do not report you face criminal and civil liability.
